This year it’s The Oslo’s turn as the popular reno show takes on yet another “seedy” building to transform. The Oslo Hotel was built as a row of five, three-storey terraces. It is located at 38 Grey St, St Kilda. A brother and sister then knocked down the walls to form one big building and housed backpackers.
The building dates back to the 1861, in the height of the gold rush when Grey Street was known as being one of the fanciest streets in the city. The heritage hotel was originally built as a row of five, three-storey terrace house.
Just before Channel Nine bought the building for a reported $10.8 million — for this year’s show — the low-budget hotel offered accommodation in shared dorm rooms for as little as $18 a night. The hostel will be completely transformed on this year’s series of The Block.
The Oslo is by far the biggest building in the history of The Block. Each house will have four bedrooms, three living areas, three outdoor spaces and a double garage.
